I think your sitcom writer puts it well - it's all a silly joke, particularly the recension into heaven, as if heaven we're up there! Anthropomorphing the myth. If he did exist and Is all around us why does he have to go upwards rather than just melt into the background? It's just what people at the time expected god's to do!
